How long to leave eye patches on
Reusable silicone patches work best for 10 to 20 minutes over a thin layer of eye cream or serum. Single-use hydrogel patches come with their own timing, usually printed on the pack. In both cases, longer is not better, and overnight is not something we would recommend.
Reusable silicone: 10 to 20 minutes
A silicone patch holds no product of its own. It sits over your eye cream and slows down evaporation, so the cream stays moist on your skin instead of drying off. That is called occlusion, and it is why a little product goes further under a patch.
Ten minutes is enough on a busy morning. Twenty gives a thicker cream time to settle. Beyond that, there is usually very little left under the patch, so you are not gaining much by waiting.
Single-use patches: follow the pack
Hydrogel and sheet patches are soaked in their own formula, and the maker decides the timing. Most ask for somewhere between 10 and 30 minutes. As they sit on your skin they slowly dry out, and a patch that has dried can start to feel tight or lift at the edges. That is your sign to take it off.
Can you leave them on overnight?
We would not. Patches are made for a short, calm moment, not for a night of turning over on the pillow. A reusable patch would simply move about, and a single-use patch would dry out long before morning. If you want something to work overnight, put on your night cream and let it do its job.
How often can you use them?
Reusable patches can be used every day, and twice a day if you like: once in the morning before make-up and once in the evening as part of winding down. Rinse them between uses. If your skin ever feels warm, itchy or uncomfortable, take them off, rinse the area and give it a break.
What to do with the minutes
- Have your coffee or tea
- Do your base make-up, brows and hair
- Answer a few messages
- Lie back with your eyes closed, which is the nicest option of all
When the time is up, lift each patch from the outer edge, pat in anything left on your skin and rinse the patches. Our step-by-step guide covers the whole routine, and Eye patches before make-up shows how to fit them into a morning.
